In June, 2023 an article appeared in the Fiji Times about “wheelbarrow boys” at the Labasa market. These are men who earn their living by carting shoppers’ loads from the market to buses or taxis. The article said that their wheelbarrows were in need of replacement. We thought this was something that Friends of Fiji could help with, and that it would be in alignment with Peace Corps’ current focus – Community Economic Empowerment. We got in touch with Jone Salusalu, the author of the article, and he helped the club complete a grant application for the purchase 14 wheelbarrows. The board approved the grant and donated $1166.36, with the stipulation that the club implement a savings program, setting aside a small amount of their income each week for maintenance and future replacements. Projected outcomes: sustainable income for several families; learning financial management.
